directions please! (5'40")
for string quartet
2018
directions please! investigates disorientation, with performers beginning “stuck” and scrambling around in attempts to find and follow each other in a hyperactive rollercoaster ride showered with playfulness, humour, scattiness and drama. The graphic score takes a notational approach whereby strict instructions and encouragement of interpretative freedom are combined to achieve a specific musical journey while also ensuring that two performances will never be the same. Also featured is on-the-spot attempting of new, unfamiliar sounds, with the audience invited to witness individual explorations of sound in real-time.
Composed during the Dublin Conservatory Summer Academy in 2019 and recorded by the RTE ConTempo Quartet.
